An eighteenth-century etching by Salomon Gessner depicting the dramatic limestone gorge of the Via Mala in Switzerland.
Salomon Gessner, a Swiss poet, painter, and engraver, produced this etching depicting the Via Mala, a narrow and treacherous gorge in the Grisons canton of Switzerland. The work captures the dramatic verticality of the limestone cliffs, which rise sharply above the Rhine. Gessner employs a precise, linear technique to define the rugged textures of the rock face, using dense cross-hatching to suggest the deep shadows within the ravine.
The composition is structured around the narrow passage of the road, which winds through the geological formation. A small bridge spans the chasm, providing a sense of scale against the imposing natural environment. The inscription at the top, 'Auf Via mala, nahe bey Rongella in Bündten', identifies the specific location, reflecting the eighteenth-century interest in documenting alpine topography.
Gessner was largely self-taught as an artist, and his graphic work often displays a personal, experimental approach to the etching medium. Rather than seeking photographic accuracy, he focuses on the atmospheric qualities of the scene, balancing the stark, jagged forms of the mountains with the delicate, rhythmic lines of his needle. This print demonstrates his ability to translate the sublime nature of the Swiss Alps into a controlled, monochrome format. The work remains a representative example of the period's fascination with travel and the documentation of remote, dramatic sites. It offers a clear view of the artist's technical process, where the interplay of light and dark defines the physical presence of the gorge. This museum-grade print preserves the original character of the etching, maintaining the clarity of the line work and the subtle tonal variations inherent in the original plate.
