A precise seventeenth-century etching by Caspar Merian, illustrating the geometric ground plan of the star-shaped Fort Sint-Andries.
This etching by Caspar Merian depicts the ground plan of Fort Sint-Andries, a strategic military fortification situated at the confluence of the Waal and Maas rivers. Merian, a member of the prominent Merian family of engravers and publishers based in Frankfurt, produced numerous topographical works that documented the military and geographical landscape of seventeenth-century Europe. His approach to cartography combines technical precision with the clean, linear aesthetic characteristic of the era's copperplate engravings.
The composition focuses on the star-shaped geometry of the fort, a design typical of the trace italienne or bastion fort system. This defensive architecture was developed to withstand cannon fire, utilising angled walls to eliminate blind spots. Merian uses hatching to define the depth of the moats and the slope of the ramparts, providing a clear sense of the structure's three-dimensional form despite the two-dimensional medium. The labels for the rivers Waal and Maas, along with the scale bar at the bottom, indicate the practical, utilitarian purpose of the print. It functioned as a visual record for military planners and those interested in the geopolitical developments of the Dutch Republic.
The print is characterised by its disciplined line work and lack of extraneous ornamentation. The focus remains entirely on the structural integrity of the fortification. By stripping away the surrounding terrain, Merian allows the viewer to analyse the mathematical precision of the bastion layout. This work is a representative example of how seventeenth-century printmaking served as a primary medium for disseminating information regarding military engineering and regional geography. The clarity of the engraving ensures that the geometric relationships between the bastions and the surrounding water remain legible, reflecting the high standards of the Merian workshop.
