A detailed seventeenth-century etching documenting the ruins of the Baths of Constantine in Rome, featuring precise line work and historical topographical detail.
This etching depicts the ruins of the Baths of Constantine, situated on the Quirinal Hill in Rome. Published by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, the print captures the weathered state of the ancient structure during the seventeenth century. The composition focuses on the remaining masonry, showing large, crumbling walls and arched openings that once formed part of the imperial complex. Vegetation clings to the upper reaches of the stone, suggesting the slow reclamation of the site by nature.
In the foreground, the artist includes small figures of people and animals, which provide a sense of scale against the massive, decaying architecture. The etching technique employs fine, parallel lines to create shadows and texture, giving the stone a tactile quality. The sky is rendered with horizontal hatching, creating a sense of atmosphere that contrasts with the solid, grounded ruins. The text at the bottom of the plate provides a contemporary description of the site, noting the encroachment of modern buildings and the state of the ruins within the garden of the Cardinal of Vercelli.
De' Rossi was a prominent publisher in Rome, known for his extensive collection of prints documenting the city's topography and antiquities. This work belongs to a tradition of topographical documentation that sought to preserve the appearance of Roman ruins before further urban development or decay occurred. The print offers a clear view of the architectural remnants, reflecting the interest of the period in classical history and the physical reality of the Roman past. It serves as a record of the site as it appeared to observers in the late seventeenth century, capturing the intersection of ancient history and the contemporary Roman environment.
