A woodblock print from the series Eight Views of the Environs of Edo. It depicts the Honmon-ji temple on a wooded hill above a village at dusk.
This woodblock print belongs to the series Eight Views of the Environs of Edo, published around 1837. Utagawa Hiroshige adapted the classical Chinese theme of the Eight Views of Xiaoxiang to the geography surrounding the Japanese capital. This specific work focuses on the evening bell at Ikegami, a site known for the Honmon-ji temple. The composition features a steep hill covered in a dense forest of pine trees. The temple buildings are visible through the foliage on the upper slopes. At the base of the hill, a cluster of houses with thatched roofs lines a wide path. Small figures of travellers and residents move through the village, some carrying bundles or walking towards the temple entrance. Hiroshige employed several traditional ukiyo-e techniques in this design. The top of the sky contains a dark band of indigo ink applied with a gradation technique known as bokashi. This creates a sense of atmosphere and suggests the approaching evening. The trees are defined by repetitive vertical lines, creating a textured mass that occupies the centre of the image. The colour palette is restrained. It relies on shades of blue, green and earth tones to define the forms. The use of space provides a clear sense of distance between the foreground village and the elevated temple complex. This print is a characteristic example of Hiroshige's work in the landscape genre during the late Edo period.
