A surrealist composition by Sabin Balasa depicting two ram-headed figures in a symbolic struggle, rendered in a striking monochromatic blue palette.
Sabin Balasa, a prominent figure in Romanian contemporary art, developed a distinct visual language often characterised by mythological themes and a dreamlike atmosphere. In this work, titled Versus, the artist explores the concept of conflict through the lens of anthropomorphic symbolism. Two figures, possessing human torsos and the heads of rams, are locked in a physical confrontation. Their posture, leaning forward with horns pressed against one another, suggests a primal struggle for dominance or territory.
The composition is dominated by a monochromatic blue palette, which lends the scene an ethereal, otherworldly quality. The ground upon which the figures stand is textured and uneven, resembling a rocky or fossilised terrain. Scattered across this surface are various horn-like forms, echoing the physical attributes of the central figures and reinforcing the theme of cyclical nature or ancient rivalry. Balasa uses light and shadow to model the musculature of the figures, creating a sense of volume that contrasts with the flattened, almost abstract treatment of the surrounding environment.
Balasa often drew inspiration from Romanian folklore and classical mythology, blending these influences with a personal, visionary style. His work frequently features elongated figures and smooth, polished surfaces, which are present here in the rendering of the skin and the fluid, almost liquid appearance of the blue ground. The absence of a clear horizon line or background context removes the scene from a specific time or place, allowing the viewer to focus on the psychological tension between the two entities. This piece invites contemplation on the nature of opposition, suggesting that conflict is a recurring, perhaps inevitable, aspect of existence. The precision of the brushwork and the deliberate choice of colour demonstrate the artist's technical control and his ability to construct complex, symbolic narratives through figurative painting.
