A haunting, surrealist composition by Romanian artist Sabin Balasa, featuring ethereal figures set against a stark, crimson horizon.
Sabin Balasa, a Romanian painter known for his distinctively atmospheric and mythological approach to the canvas, created works that often occupy a space between dream and reality. In 'The Course', the viewer encounters a scene defined by high-contrast lighting and a sombre, almost otherworldly palette. The composition features a central figure with arms raised, surrounded by spectral forms and a canine presence, all set against a stark, blood-red sky that dominates the upper portion of the frame.
Balasa frequently employed a technique that prioritised fluid, almost liquid forms, giving his subjects an ethereal quality. The figures in this work appear to emerge from the dark, textured ground, their bodies rendered with a sculptural weight that contrasts with the nebulous background. The use of deep blues and greys for the foreground elements creates a sense of isolation, while the crimson horizon provides a jarring, intense backdrop. This juxtaposition is characteristic of his broader body of work, which often explores themes of human existence, cosmic cycles, and the passage of time through a lens of personal symbolism.
His approach to anatomy and form is not intended to be strictly realistic. Instead, he distorts and elongates his subjects to convey emotional states and philosophical inquiries. The figures possess a haunting, timeless quality, suggesting narratives that exist outside of conventional history. By stripping away extraneous detail, Balasa focuses the viewer on the interaction between the figures and their environment. The result is a visual experience that feels both ancient and modern, inviting interpretation without providing a singular, definitive meaning. This print captures the depth of his original oil application, preserving the moody transitions between the dark earth tones and the saturated red sky.
