A 1524 engraving by Flemish artist Dirck Vellert, depicting the goddess Venus navigating the sea in a shell, accompanied by Cupid.
This engraving by the Flemish artist Dirck Vellert, dated 1524, depicts the goddess Venus navigating the sea within a shell. Vellert, a contemporary of Lucas van Leyden and a member of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, was known for his precise and small-scale graphic works. The composition features Venus seated centrally, holding a staff that functions as a mast for a makeshift sail. Above her, a small Cupid figure aims his bow, reinforcing the classical mythological theme of love and desire.
The technical execution demonstrates the characteristic style of the Northern Renaissance, with fine hatching used to model the figure and the surrounding water. The shell acts as a vessel, a common motif in Renaissance depictions of the birth or journey of Venus. Vellert employs a clear, linear approach, typical of his work as both a painter and a glass designer. The date 1524 is inscribed at the top, a common practice for Vellert, who frequently included dates and his monogram in his prints.
This work reflects the period's fascination with classical antiquity, filtered through the lens of Northern European printmaking traditions. The figure of Venus is rendered with a sense of physical presence, while the surrounding environment remains somewhat schematic. The print provides insight into the dissemination of classical iconography in the sixteenth-century Low Countries, where such small-format engravings were collected by humanists and artists alike. The attention to detail, particularly in the rendering of the shell and the waves, shows the artist's focus on texture and form within the limitations of the copper plate medium.
