A detailed 18th-century watercolour depicting the mythological encounter between Venus and Neptune as they conspire against Telemachus.
This work by the Dutch artist Rienk Keyert depicts a scene from the classical tradition, specifically drawing upon the narrative of Telemachus. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. In the upper section, Venus is shown descending from the clouds, accompanied by a small Cupid and a pair of swans. Her posture is dynamic, reflecting the fluid movement characteristic of the Rococo period. Below her, Neptune stands within a shell-shaped chariot pulled by sea horses, holding his trident aloft. A triton blows a conch shell to the right, adding to the maritime atmosphere of the scene.
The artist employs a delicate application of watercolour, allowing the paper to provide luminosity to the clouds and the sea foam. The ink outlines are precise, defining the musculature of the figures and the architectural details of the chariot. The palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, muted greens, and flesh tones to create a sense of ethereal distance. The inclusion of handwritten Dutch text at the base of the image provides a direct narrative link, explaining the goddess's plea to the sea god to stir up a storm and prevent the arrival of Telemachus at Ithaca.
Keyert, active in the late 18th century, demonstrates a clear command of classical iconography. The work functions as a narrative illustration, likely intended for a publication or a private collection of drawings. The balance between the celestial realm of Venus and the aquatic domain of Neptune is managed through the vertical arrangement of the figures. The overall effect is one of theatricality, typical of the period's interest in dramatic mythological encounters. The work remains a fine example of Dutch draughtsmanship from the era, showing how classical themes were interpreted through the lens of 18th-century decorative sensibilities.
