A 1566 woodcut by Nicolò Boldrini, based on a design by Titian, depicting an intimate scene of Venus and Cupid within a wooded setting.
This woodcut, executed by Nicolò Boldrini in 1566, represents a significant collaboration between the printmaker and the Venetian master Titian. The inscription at the bottom left, 'Titianus inv.', confirms that the composition originated from a design by Titian, while Boldrini served as the skilled craftsman responsible for translating the painterly concept into the medium of the woodblock.
The scene depicts Venus seated in a wooded environment, cradling the infant Cupid. The figures are rendered with the characteristic fluidity associated with the Venetian school, despite the inherent limitations of the woodcut technique. Boldrini employs a series of parallel and cross-hatched lines to suggest volume, shadow, and the texture of the drapery. The surrounding foliage is treated with a degree of stylisation, providing a rhythmic backdrop that frames the central figures without overwhelming them.
Boldrini was active in Venice during the mid-sixteenth century and is recognised for his ability to capture the tonal qualities of Titian's work. This print demonstrates the technical precision required to maintain the integrity of the original design while navigating the subtractive nature of woodblock carving. The interaction between the mother and child is intimate, reflecting the humanist interests of the period. The inclusion of a small squirrel perched in the tree above adds a touch of naturalistic detail, a common motif in Venetian prints of the era. This work provides insight into the dissemination of artistic ideas in sixteenth-century Italy, where prints allowed compositions by major painters to reach a wider audience beyond the confines of private collections or churches.
