A classical mythological scene by Ferdinand Bol, depicting the parting of Venus and Adonis with dramatic lighting and careful attention to texture.
Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this depiction of the mythological lovers Venus and Adonis during the height of the Dutch Golden Age. The composition draws upon Ovid's Metamorphoses, capturing the moment of departure as Adonis prepares for the hunt, while Venus attempts to dissuade him. Bol employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, a technique inherited from his master, to focus attention on the central figures.
Adonis stands in the centre, dressed in hunting attire with a spear and hounds nearby. Venus, seated on the ground, reaches out to him with a gesture of concern. A small Cupid figure clings to Adonis, adding a narrative layer to the scene. The background features a darkened, atmospheric woodland setting, which contrasts with the illuminated skin tones of the figures. Bol's handling of the fabric, particularly the white drapery around Venus, demonstrates his technical skill in rendering textures and folds.
The painting reflects the period's interest in classical themes, adapted to the aesthetic preferences of the Dutch elite. Bol moved away from the intense chiaroscuro of his early years, adopting a more refined and classicising style that became popular in the latter half of the seventeenth century. The inclusion of the hunting dogs and the spear provides a sense of narrative urgency, grounding the mythological subject in a tangible, earthly reality. This work remains a representative example of Bol's ability to balance dramatic tension with a polished, academic approach to figure painting.
