Victor Vasarely, a central figure in the development of Op Art, created the Vega series to explore the limits of human perception. This work utilises a grid of squares, which the artist systematically distorts to generate the illusion of three-dimensional volume. By manipulating the size and shape of these individual units, Vasarely creates the appearance of spherical protrusions and indentations on a flat surface.

The monochrome palette of black and white serves to clarify the geometric operations at play. Without the distraction of colour, the viewer focuses entirely on the kinetic effect produced by the warped grid. The composition relies on the viewer's eye to complete the suggestion of depth, as the brain attempts to reconcile the rigid structure of the square with the fluid, organic curves of the distorted forms.

Vasarely viewed his work as a form of social art, intended to be accessible and universal.
