A detailed eighteenth-century illustration by Abraham Delfos depicting the fourteenth sleigh in a ceremonial winter procession, featuring musicians and torchbearers.
This work by Abraham Delfos depicts the fourteenth sleigh in a formal procession, a common feature of eighteenth-century aristocratic winter festivities in the Netherlands. Delfos, a Dutch engraver and draughtsman, captures the scene with a focus on the precise details of the period attire and the decorative elements of the transport. The composition is arranged in a linear, frieze-like manner, typical of documentation for ceremonial events.
The sleigh itself is painted in a soft blue, adorned with painted motifs, and carries four musicians playing brass instruments. They are accompanied by two riders on horseback, each holding a long torch, which suggests the procession took place during the twilight hours or evening. The horses are harnessed with elaborate trappings, including a red and gold saddle cloth on the lead pair, reflecting the status of the participants. The figures are rendered with a delicate touch, and the use of watercolour adds a light, airy quality to the scene, consistent with the aesthetic preferences of the mid-to-late eighteenth century.
Delfos was active in Leiden and is known for his technical skill in printmaking. This specific image belongs to a series documenting a sleigh ride, a popular social activity among the elite. The work provides a clear view of the fashion, musical instruments, and equestrian equipment of the era. The clean, white background emphasises the figures and the sleigh, allowing the viewer to examine the individual components of the procession without distraction. The attention to the texture of the clothing and the harness details demonstrates the artist's interest in accurate historical record-keeping, while the overall presentation remains decorative and refined.
