A serene rural scene by James de Rijk, featuring cattle and figures resting before a thatched barn, rendered in pen and grey wash.
This work by James de Rijk (1706-1767) captures a quiet moment of rural life, a subject that remained popular in Dutch art throughout the eighteenth century. The composition centres on a thatched barn, providing a shelter for the figures and animals that populate the scene. De Rijk employs a delicate pen and ink technique, supplemented by subtle grey washes to define the forms and create a sense of atmospheric depth.
The foreground features a small group of cattle and sheep resting on the earth, while a farmer and his family are positioned near the barn entrance. The artist uses light washes to suggest the texture of the thatch and the soft contours of the surrounding trees. The background recedes into a low horizon, typical of the Dutch countryside, with faint indications of distant figures.
De Rijk, a Dutch draughtsman, demonstrates a clear focus on the observation of everyday life. The work avoids unnecessary embellishment, relying instead on the clarity of line and the balance of light and shadow. The use of a monochromatic palette allows the viewer to focus on the arrangement of the figures and the structural elements of the barn. This drawing reflects the continuity of the pastoral tradition, where the interaction between humans and their livestock is presented with a sense of calm and order. The signature of the artist is visible in the lower left corner, confirming the attribution to De Rijk, who was known for his skilled handling of ink and wash in depicting rural subjects. This print offers a view into the aesthetic preferences of the period, where the simplicity of farm life was a recurring theme for collectors and artists alike.
