A traditional Japanese Kacho-ga scroll painting featuring a detailed arrangement of peonies, plum blossoms, garden rocks, and aquatic life.
This composition by Okabe Ko displays the conventions of the Kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of birds, flowers, and seasonal elements. The work presents a collection of botanical and aquatic subjects arranged with a sense of balance and observation. A central porcelain vase, decorated with subtle dragon motifs, holds a large arrangement of peonies and plum blossoms. The artist uses a soft, muted palette to render the delicate petals of the peonies, contrasting with the darker, more structured forms of the garden rock positioned to the right.
Below the main vase, the artist includes a woven basket filled with smaller blooms and foliage. The lower section of the silk scroll introduces aquatic life, including small crabs and a shallow basin containing water plants. A grasshopper is positioned near the basket, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise still arrangement. The composition avoids deep perspective, favouring a flatter, decorative arrangement that allows each element to be viewed clearly against the neutral background. The brushwork is precise, reflecting the technical discipline required for traditional ink and colour painting on silk.
Okabe Ko demonstrates an attention to detail in the rendering of the various textures, from the smooth surface of the ceramic vase to the rough, weathered appearance of the garden rock. The inclusion of diverse species, ranging from terrestrial flowers to marine creatures, suggests a desire to capture a broad view of the natural world within a single frame. This piece is a representative example of the genre, where the arrangement of objects serves as a study of form and seasonal symbolism. The work maintains a quiet, observational quality, typical of the period's interest in the natural sciences and artistic representation.
