Description
A study of a floral bouquet by Belgian Neo-Impressionist Georges Lemmen, utilising pointillist techniques to explore light and colour.
Georges Lemmen, a central figure in the Belgian Neo-Impressionist circle, demonstrates his mastery of colour theory and pointillist technique in this still life. The composition features a ceramic vase overflowing with a dense arrangement of yellow sunflowers, purple asters, and white daisies. Lemmen applies paint in small, distinct touches, allowing the viewer's eye to blend the colours optically. This method creates a shimmering effect across the surface of the canvas, particularly within the petals and the textured background. The artist balances the verticality of the floral arrangement with the horizontal plane of the table. To the left, a patterned textile adds a layer of visual complexity, while a red object rests on the right side of the surface. The background is rendered in warm, earthy tones that contrast with the cooler purples and bright yellows of the bouquet. Lemmen was closely associated with the Les Vingt group in Brussels, and his work reflects the transition from the strict scientific application of dots seen in the works of Georges Seurat toward a more fluid, expressive use of colour. This piece captures the domestic intimacy often explored by artists of the period. By focusing on a common subject, Lemmen elevates the everyday object through his systematic approach to light and pigment. The surface quality remains tactile, with the layered application of paint providing a sense of depth and volume to the flowers. The work remains a clear example of the Belgian contribution to the development of modern painting at the turn of the twentieth century, showing a departure from traditional academic representation in favour of a more analytical study of light and form.
