A sweeping view of the Denbighshire valley in North Wales by David Cox, featuring windswept trees and a harvest scene under a broad sky.
David Cox was a leading figure of the Birmingham School and a prominent member of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours. While he spent the majority of his career working in watercolour, he began painting in oils more frequently after 1841. This shift followed a period of study under the artist William Müller. This work, painted in 1849, depicts the Denbighshire valley in North Wales. Cox visited this region often during his summer trips to Bettws-y-Coed, a village that became a popular destination for artists due to his influence. The composition uses a group of tall trees to anchor the right side of the frame. Their foliage appears windswept, painted with the loose and rapid brushstrokes characteristic of his later period. On the left, a harvest scene includes haystacks and a weathered wooden fence. A small group of figures stands near a cart on the right, providing a sense of scale to the wide environment. One figure carries a bundle on her head, a common motif in Cox's rural scenes. The distant mountains are rendered in soft tones of purple and blue, creating a sense of depth through atmospheric perspective. Cox focused on the effects of light and weather. The sky occupies a large portion of the canvas, filled with moving clouds that suggest a breezy day. He used a palette of natural greens and earth tones to represent the Welsh countryside. This painting is an example of his late style, where he applied the fluid techniques of watercolour to oil on canvas. The surface of the painting has a textured quality, as Cox often used a heavy impasto to suggest the ruggedness of the terrain. This approach differed from the more polished academic landscapes of the mid-nineteenth century.
