Description
Upperthong is seen through the golden arches of a stone viaduct, where a shallow stream and folded Kirklees hills catch the last warmth of daylight.
A large maple frames the left edge, its dark trunk and yellow-green leaves contrasting with the squared masonry. Reflections stretch beneath the arches across water scattered with smooth stones, while fields appear in bands through the openings. The bridge deck cuts a strong diagonal below broad, pale cloud.
In Upperthong, such valley routes link the village to the wider ground around Holmfirth and the Pennine slopes. The view will speak to anyone who has followed a stream there, noticing how the viaduct turns a familiar rural walk into a sequence of stone, water and hills.
