A minimalist etching by Liliana Porter from 1969, featuring a single folded sheet of paper rendered with precise aquatint stippling.
Liliana Porter, an Argentinian artist based in New York, produced this work in 1969. It belongs to a period of her career where she explored the boundaries between reality and representation. The image depicts a single sheet of paper with a folded corner, rendered through the precise application of etching and aquatint techniques. By using a stippled texture, Porter creates a convincing illusion of depth and physical form on a flat surface.
This piece engages with the viewer by questioning the nature of the object. The folded corner acts as a visual device, drawing attention to the materiality of the paper itself. Porter often employs such motifs to examine how we perceive space and objects. The monochromatic palette, composed of varying densities of black ink, allows the focus to remain entirely on the geometry of the fold and the play of light and shadow.
Throughout her career, Porter has maintained an interest in the ambiguity of images. This work is an early example of her ability to transform simple, everyday subjects into objects of contemplation. The composition is stark, avoiding unnecessary detail to ensure the viewer considers the relationship between the printed image and the physical reality it mimics. As a fine art print, this work demonstrates the technical skill required to achieve such subtle tonal gradations through traditional printmaking methods. It remains a clear example of how minimalist aesthetics can be used to explore complex philosophical questions regarding perception and the nature of art.
