A study of a winter stream by Julius Sergius von Klever, capturing the quiet transition of the seasons through direct, tactile brushwork.
This small-scale oil study by Julius Sergius von Klever captures a quiet moment of transition in the Russian countryside. The composition is divided by a narrow, winding stream that cuts through the centre of the frame, separating a patch of thawing earth from a bank still covered in snow. The trees, rendered with quick, confident brushwork, frame the view and lead the eye toward the horizon line, where the sky meets the distant, muted terrain.
Klever, known for his atmospheric depictions of the northern climate, employs a restrained palette here. The browns of the tree trunks and the muddy ground contrast with the cool, pale blue of the water and the white of the remaining snow. The paint application is direct and tactile, showing the artist's focus on capturing the specific light and texture of a winter day. Unlike his more dramatic, large-scale exhibition pieces, this work functions as a direct observation of nature, likely painted en plein air or as a preparatory study for a larger composition.
The work reflects the artist's interest in the changing seasons, a recurring theme in his career. The lack of human presence allows the viewer to focus entirely on the physical qualities of the environment, from the skeletal branches of the trees to the reflective surface of the water. The texture of the canvas remains visible in areas where the paint is applied thinly, adding to the immediate, unrefined quality of the piece. It is a study of light, shadow, and the subtle colour shifts that occur when winter begins to yield to spring.
