This textile fragment originates from the Coptic period in Egypt, a time when linen and wool weaving reached a high degree of technical proficiency. The piece features a symmetrical arrangement of two peacocks flanking a central wreath, which contains a cross. Below this primary motif, a series of interconnected circular forms creates a rhythmic, geometric structure across the fabric surface. The imagery reflects the syncretism of the era, blending classical decorative motifs with early Christian symbolism.
The composition is balanced and formal, typical of Coptic weaving techniques where dyed wool threads were inserted into a linen ground to create patterns. The peacocks, often associated with immortality and the afterlife in both pagan and Christian iconography, are rendered with a focus on silhouette and pattern rather than anatomical realism.
