A detailed photographic study of an ancient Coptic textile fragment, featuring a repeating wave pattern woven in wool and linen.
This image documents a fragment of ancient textile, likely originating from Egypt during the Coptic period. The piece displays a woven band featuring a repeating wave or guilloche pattern. The construction utilises a combination of wool and linen, which was common for garments and decorative hangings produced in the region during late antiquity. The monochromatic appearance in this photograph belies the original colour palette, which often included dyed wools in shades of red, blue, or yellow against a natural linen ground.
The design demonstrates a high degree of technical skill in loom-based weaving. The central motif consists of a continuous, undulating line that creates a series of enclosed circular or oval shapes. This geometric approach to decoration was a hallmark of the period, reflecting a transition from classical motifs towards more stylised, symbolic forms. The physical condition of the fragment, with its frayed edges and visible weave structure, provides evidence of the material culture of the time. Such fragments were often recovered from burial sites where the arid climate preserved organic materials that would otherwise have perished.
This print captures the texture of the weave and the specific character of the decorative border. It offers a view into the history of textile production, where functional items were frequently embellished with geometric or figurative designs. The presence of museum accession numbers, such as 90.5.591, indicates its provenance within a major institutional collection. By examining the structure of the weave, one gains an appreciation for the manual labour and aesthetic choices of ancient weavers. This reproduction maintains the historical integrity of the original object, presenting it as a study of form and technique.
