A monochromatic Coptic textile fragment featuring vertical bands, dating to the late antique period in Egypt.
This textile fragment originates from the Coptic period in Egypt, a time when weaving techniques reached a high level of technical proficiency. The piece displays a dark, monochromatic ground, likely dyed with indigo or a similar organic pigment, which has faded over the centuries. Two vertical bands run parallel along the right side, providing a structural contrast to the main field of the fabric.
Such fragments were often used as decorative elements on tunics or other garments, serving as clavi or shoulder bands. The weave structure is characteristic of the period, utilising a combination of wool for the decorative elements and linen for the warp and weft. The physical condition of the textile shows the effects of time, with areas of wear and loss that reveal the underlying construction of the fabric. These remnants provide information regarding the daily life and aesthetic preferences of late antique Egyptian society.
The simplicity of the design, defined by its geometric verticality, reflects a functional approach to textile decoration. While the original colour has shifted due to environmental exposure, the composition remains clear. This print captures the texture of the ancient fibres, allowing for an examination of the weave and the material quality of the original object. It is a document of historical craft, preserved through the dry conditions of the Egyptian desert, and now presented as a study in minimalist design and ancient material culture.
