A late-career abstract work by Hans Hartung, featuring bold, gestural black lines on a stark white background.
Hans Hartung, a central figure in the development of European abstraction, produced this work in the final year of his life. The composition consists of stark, black lines set against a clean white ground. These marks possess a kinetic energy, suggesting speed and spontaneity. Hartung often utilised unconventional tools to apply paint, moving away from traditional brushwork to achieve these specific gestural qualities. The lines intersect and loop across the surface, creating a sense of movement that remains contained within the frame.
In his later years, Hartung experimented with various techniques, including the use of spray guns and rollers, to manipulate paint on large canvases. This particular work reflects his focus on the relationship between the mark and the space it occupies. The contrast between the dark, fluid lines and the empty white background creates a tension that defines the visual experience. There is no attempt to represent external reality or narrative content. Instead, the focus remains on the physical act of painting and the immediate presence of the lines themselves.
Hartung's approach to abstraction was influenced by his experiences during the Second World War and his subsequent move to France. His work is often associated with the Informel movement, which prioritised intuitive expression over geometric structure. By the time he created this piece, his style had become increasingly minimalist, stripping away extraneous elements to leave only the essential gesture. The result is a direct, unmediated record of the artist's movement. This print captures the precise balance of the original composition, maintaining the clarity of the lines and the starkness of the background. It is a clear example of Hartung's late-career focus on the power of the singular, decisive mark.
