Untitled (Stripe Painting) - Morris Louis

A classic example of Morris Louis's late-period stripe paintings, featuring fluid vertical bands of colour applied to unprimed canvas.

Morris Louis is a central figure in the development of Color Field painting. This work belongs to his later period, characterised by the application of thinned acrylic paint onto unprimed canvas. By allowing the pigment to flow across the surface, Louis removed the physical presence of the brushstroke, leaving only the pure colour to define the space. The vertical bands of pigment appear to soak into the fabric, creating a fusion between the paint and the support.

In this composition, two distinct groupings of vertical stripes occupy the centre of the canvas. The surrounding negative space remains largely untouched, which forces the viewer to focus on the interaction of the colours within the stripes. The palette includes various shades of green, yellow, and deep red, which bleed into one another at the edges. This technique, often referred to as soak-stain, produces a soft, atmospheric quality that contrasts with the hard-edged geometric abstraction common in other mid-century movements.

Louis worked in Washington, D.C., where he developed these methods after observing the techniques of Helen Frankenthaler. His approach prioritised the flatness of the picture plane, rejecting the illusion of depth found in traditional painting. The verticality of the stripes provides a sense of structure, yet the fluid nature of the application ensures that the edges remain soft and organic. This piece represents the artist's interest in the physical properties of paint and the way colour can exist independently of form. The work is a clear example of the minimalist tendencies that emerged during the late 1950s and early 1960s, where the artist sought to reduce painting to its most basic elements of colour and surface.
