A unique still life study painted directly onto a wooden artist's palette, featuring fruit in a loose, atmospheric style by Dutch artist Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande.
This work presents a unique intersection of artistic process and finished composition. Painted directly onto a wooden artist's palette, the piece features a small arrangement of fruit, including a lemon and a peach, set against a loosely rendered, atmospheric background. The choice of support is unconventional, as the artist has utilised the functional tool of his trade as the canvas itself. The thumb hole remains visible, serving as a reminder of the physical act of painting.
Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande was a Dutch artist associated with the Haagse School. While he gained recognition primarily for his etchings and atmospheric depictions of coastal scenes, this work demonstrates his proficiency with oil paint. The brushwork is gestural and immediate, reflecting the spontaneous nature of a study or a decorative experiment. The palette of muted greens, ochres, and earthy browns aligns with the tonal preferences of his contemporaries, who often favoured subtle colour harmonies over high-contrast palettes.
The composition is informal, with the fruit appearing to rest upon the wooden surface. The texture of the wood grain occasionally shows through the paint, adding a tactile quality to the image. By choosing to paint on a palette, the artist creates a dialogue between the medium and the subject matter. It is a rare glimpse into the private studio practice of a late nineteenth-century painter, where the boundary between the workspace and the artwork becomes blurred. This print captures the specific texture of the original oil paint, preserving the impasto and the visible brush marks that define the artist's hand. It offers a distinct perspective on the still life genre, moving away from formal arrangements toward a more personal, studio-based aesthetic.
