A photographic study of a clear glass decanter featuring blue and red speckled patterns and elongated streaks along the neck.
This photographic study captures a piece of blown glass, characterised by its clear body and applied colour decoration. The vessel features a rounded base that transitions into a slender neck, topped with a simple rim. The surface is decorated with a pattern of blue and dark red spots, which appear to be suspended within the glass matrix. These spots vary in size and density, creating a visual rhythm across the transparent surface.
In the neck area, the application of colour shifts in character. The spots are elongated into streaks, suggesting the manipulation of the glass while it remained in a molten state. This technique, often associated with traditional glassblowing methods, relies on the interaction between the clear gather of glass and the coloured frit or shards applied during the forming process. The resulting effect is one of controlled spontaneity, where the heat and gravity influence the final placement of the pigments.
The object is presented against a neutral background, allowing the play of light through the transparent material to become the primary subject. The light passes through the clear sections while catching the denser, coloured areas, creating soft shadows and internal reflections. Such vessels were common in various European glassmaking traditions, where artisans experimented with colour application to create unique, non-uniform patterns. This print offers a clear view of the material qualities of the glass, from the smooth, curved exterior to the depth provided by the suspended colour inclusions. It serves as a study of form, light, and the physical properties of glass as a medium for artistic expression.
