A series of six Art Nouveau portraits by Raphael Kirchner. These illustrations feature women in fashionable Edwardian attire, rendered in a soft colour palette with decorative grey borders.
Raphael Kirchner was a prolific illustrator during the Belle Époque. He is best known for his postcard designs that often featured stylised depictions of women. This collection of six panels demonstrates his characteristic approach to the female form. Each portrait is framed by a wide grey border on the right side, creating a vertical composition that was common in early 20th-century print media. The women are depicted in various poses and costumes. Some face the viewer directly, while others are shown in profile or from behind. Kirchner used a soft colour palette consisting of pale pinks, greens, and blues. The figures are often adorned with flowers, large hats, and fashionable accessories of the period. One figure holds a horseshoe, a common symbol of good luck in Edwardian imagery. Another wears a black hat and a dark, feathered garment, contrasting with the lighter tones of the other panels. Kirchner's work was popular in Paris and London. His style influenced the development of the pin-up genre. These illustrations were originally produced for the postcard market, which was at its height between 1900 and 1914. The use of negative space and the vertical orientation suggest these were intended for mass production and collection. The lines are delicate, and the shading is subtle, typical of the lithographic processes used at the time.
