A late-period abstract work by Sam Francis, featuring a central saturated blue void surrounded by fluid indigo washes and sharp black accents.
This work by Sam Francis represents the artist's late-period exploration of space, light, and the physical properties of paint. Francis, a central figure in the development of post-war American abstraction, spent significant time in Paris and Tokyo, influences that manifest in his approach to the canvas. Unlike the dense, all-over compositions of his earlier career, this piece employs a more open structure, allowing the white ground of the canvas to function as an active element rather than a passive backdrop.
The composition is dominated by a central, saturated blue void, which appears to float against the surrounding darker, fluid washes of indigo and deep teal. Francis utilised the fluidity of acrylic paint to create organic, bleeding edges where colours meet, suggesting a sense of suspension or weightlessness. The application of paint varies from thin, translucent layers to more opaque, gestural marks, demonstrating his control over the medium's viscosity. Black linear elements punctuate the periphery, providing a sharp contrast to the soft, atmospheric quality of the blue centre.
Francis often spoke of his interest in the concept of the 'void' and the way light interacts with colour. In this work, the interplay between the central blue mass and the surrounding dark pigments creates a sense of depth that is not reliant on traditional perspective. The viewer is invited to observe the physical interaction of the pigments, which retain the energy of their application. This print captures the nuances of the original surface, from the subtle variations in the blue tones to the crispness of the black accents. It is an example of the artist's ability to balance spontaneity with a rigorous sense of formal arrangement, characteristic of his final years of production.
