A pair of candid photographic studies documenting local life in Ajaccio, Corsica, captured by Dutch ethnographer Théodore van Lelyveld around 1900.
This photographic study by Théodore van Lelyveld captures two distinct scenes of daily life in Ajaccio, Corsica, at the turn of the twentieth century. The upper image depicts an elderly man seated against a textured stone wall, clutching a walking stick. The lower image shows a man resting on a low stone boundary, his posture relaxed as he occupies the roadside. Both images are presented within the context of a personal album, mounted on grid-lined paper that provides a sense of the photographer's methodical approach to documenting his travels.
Van Lelyveld, a Dutch ethnographer and photographer, possessed a keen eye for the social fabric of the regions he visited. His work often focuses on the quiet, unposed moments of local inhabitants. These photographs avoid the staged quality common in commercial travel imagery of the era. Instead, they offer a direct observation of Corsican life, prioritising the interplay of light and shadow on stone surfaces and the natural demeanour of his subjects. The sepia-toned prints retain a soft, atmospheric quality characteristic of early twentieth-century gelatin silver processes.
By documenting these figures, Van Lelyveld provides a glimpse into the rural and urban environments of Corsica during a period of transition. The focus remains on the human element, with the architecture and natural surroundings serving as a backdrop to the individuals. These prints are valuable for their historical record of dress, social habits, and the physical environment of Ajaccio. The composition in both frames is straightforward, reflecting a documentary intent that values clarity and authenticity over artifice. As a collection, these images offer a window into the Mediterranean world as seen through the lens of a curious traveller, capturing the stillness of a moment in time with precision and restraint.
