A precise geometric screenprint by Swiss artist Max Bill, exploring the relationship between colour, form, and mathematical balance.
Max Bill was a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, a movement that prioritised mathematical precision and the autonomy of visual elements. This screenprint demonstrates his approach to the relationship between colour, form, and space. The composition relies on a rigorous geometric structure, where primary and secondary hues are arranged to create a sense of balance and order. By avoiding representational imagery, Bill focuses the viewer on the physical properties of the shapes themselves.
The work features a series of trapezoidal and triangular forms that frame a central negative space. The use of flat, unmodulated colour fields is characteristic of his mid-career output, where he sought to remove the subjective hand of the artist in favour of objective clarity. The interaction between the blue, red, and yellow segments creates a subtle tension, as the eye attempts to resolve the spatial depth suggested by the angled lines. Despite the simplicity of the individual components, the overall arrangement possesses a calculated complexity.
Bill studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he was influenced by the teachings of Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. He later became a founding member of the Ulm School of Design, further refining his theories on visual communication and the mathematical basis of beauty. This print reflects his lifelong pursuit of a universal visual language, free from external narrative or emotional baggage. The clean edges and precise alignment of the forms are typical of his technical rigour. It is an example of how minimal means can produce a structured, coherent visual experience, inviting the viewer to engage with the logic of the composition rather than seeking hidden meaning.
