Description
A serene, post-impressionist view of a Breton field, featuring rhythmic brushwork and a focus on tonal harmony by the French Nabis artist Paul Sérusier.
Paul Sérusier, a founding member of the Nabis, maintained a lifelong connection to the rural regions of Brittany. This work captures a quiet, verdant field, rendered with the flattened perspective and simplified forms that defined his later career. Unlike the experimental, synthetic colour palettes of his early work, this piece employs a more naturalistic, albeit stylised, approach to the Breton countryside.
The composition is anchored by a prominent, slender tree in the foreground, its trunk curving gently to guide the eye across the meadow. Behind this, a series of smaller saplings and a low stone wall divide the space, creating a sense of depth without relying on traditional academic perspective. The brushwork is deliberate, with short, rhythmic strokes that build the texture of the grass and the dense foliage of the background trees. Sérusier often sought to capture the spiritual essence of a place, and here, the stillness of the scene suggests a meditative observation of nature.
By the time this work was produced, Sérusier had moved away from the radical colour theories of his youth, focusing instead on the structural integrity of the image. The palette is dominated by various shades of green, ranging from pale, sun-drenched grass to the deeper, shadowed tones of the woodland edge. This focus on tonal harmony creates a unified atmosphere, typical of his mature period. The work reflects his interest in the decorative potential of painting, where the arrangement of shapes and colours takes precedence over strict representational accuracy. It remains a clear example of his ability to transform a simple rural view into a composed, rhythmic arrangement of form and light.
