A striking example from Cy Twombly's Blackboard series, featuring rhythmic white loops against a deep, dark ground.
This work belongs to the series often referred to as the Blackboard paintings, produced by Cy Twombly during the late 1960s. The composition features a dark, slate-coloured ground, reminiscent of a schoolroom surface, upon which white, looping lines are inscribed. These marks possess a rhythmic, continuous quality, suggesting the physical motion of the artist's hand as it traverses the canvas.
Twombly moved away from the gestural brushwork typical of his contemporaries, opting instead for a more restrained, linear approach. The lines do not form recognisable shapes or symbols, yet they imply a sense of urgency and temporal progression. The interaction between the light-coloured pigment and the deep, matte background creates a visual tension, where the marks appear to float or hover above the surface.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the act of mark-making itself. By stripping away representational elements, Twombly focuses the viewer's attention on the energy and speed of the line. The repetitive, looping motion evokes the practice of handwriting or scribbling, yet it is elevated through the scale and deliberate placement on the canvas. The result is a work that balances spontaneity with a structured, almost meditative, repetition. It invites observation of the physical surface, the texture of the medium, and the way light interacts with the layered application of pigment. This print captures the nuances of the original surface, providing a clear view of the calligraphic marks against the dark, atmospheric field.
