A conceptual installation by Felix Gonzalez-Torres featuring a string of light bulbs arranged in a corner, exploring themes of presence and domestic space.
Felix Gonzalez-Torres created this work in 1994, utilising a series of light bulbs, sockets, and cords. The installation occupies the corner of a room, with a vertical string of bulbs ascending the wall and a cluster of bulbs gathered on the floor. The arrangement invites viewers to consider the physical space of the gallery and the nature of light as a medium.
Gonzalez-Torres often employed everyday objects to address themes of loss, public versus private spheres, and the fragility of human connection. By using standard industrial components, he removed the hand of the artist from the production process, allowing the work to exist as a set of instructions that can be reconfigured or replaced. The bulbs emit a warm, steady glow, transforming the stark corner into a site of quiet reflection.
This piece is part of a series of light string works by the artist. Each iteration functions as a modular system, where the number of bulbs and the specific configuration can vary depending on the exhibition space. The work does not rely on traditional artistic techniques, such as painting or sculpture, but rather on the placement of mass-produced items to alter the atmosphere of an interior. The simplicity of the materials contrasts with the emotional weight often associated with the artist's practice. As the bulbs burn out, they are replaced, ensuring the work remains functional over time. This cycle of maintenance is integral to the piece, suggesting a continuous state of presence and renewal within the gallery environment.
