A lyrical abstract composition by Sandu Darie, featuring gestural lines and rhythmic marks on a soft pink ground.
Sandu Darie, a figure associated with the Concrete Art movement, produced this work during his period of experimentation with non-representational forms. Born in Romania, Darie relocated to Cuba in 1941, where he became a participant in the development of the 'Diez Pintores Concretos' group. This piece reflects his interest in the interaction between line, colour, and spatial perception.
The composition is defined by a soft, monochromatic pink ground that provides a unified field for the application of gestural marks. Across this surface, Darie distributes a series of intersecting lines and curved strokes in shades of red, black, and pale blue. These marks do not form recognisable objects, but rather suggest a rhythmic, kinetic energy. The application of paint is direct, allowing the brushwork to remain visible and immediate.
Unlike the rigid geometric structures often associated with Concrete Art, this work leans towards a more lyrical abstraction. The lines appear to float or drift across the paper, creating a sense of shallow depth. The balance between the density of the marks and the open space of the background creates a visual tension. Darie often explored how simple elements could generate complex spatial relationships, and this work is an example of his focus on the autonomy of the visual mark. By stripping away narrative content, the artist invites the viewer to engage with the physical properties of the medium and the arrangement of the elements on the page. This print captures the spontaneity of the original gouache, preserving the texture and the subtle variations in the paint application.
