A nineteenth-century lithograph by Célestin Nanteuil, originally created as a cover illustration for a musical score featuring a nocturnal Venetian scene.
This lithograph by Célestin Nanteuil serves as the cover illustration for the musical score 'Une nuit dans les lagunes', composed by Auguste Morel with lyrics by Edouard Thierry. Nanteuil, a figure associated with the French Romantic movement, was well-regarded for his work in book illustration and lithography during the mid-nineteenth century. His style often captured the dramatic and emotive qualities favoured by the Romantics of the period.
The composition depicts two figures in a gondola, navigating the Venetian waters under a moonlit sky. The male figure, dressed in a heavy cloak, stands at the prow, while a partially draped companion leans against him. The artist employs fine hatching and cross-hatching techniques to render the textures of the clothing, the wooden boat, and the shimmering reflection of the moon upon the water. The atmospheric quality of the scene is achieved through a subtle gradation of tones, moving from the dark, solid forms of the figures to the lighter, ethereal horizon line.
As a piece of ephemera, this print provides insight into the visual culture of nineteenth-century Paris, where music publishers commissioned artists to create evocative covers to attract buyers. The typography integrated with the image reflects the aesthetic conventions of the time, balancing the illustrative narrative with the necessary bibliographic information. The work demonstrates Nanteuil's technical proficiency in lithography, a medium that allowed for the reproduction of painterly effects in a commercial format. The scene conveys a sense of quiet solitude, typical of the Romantic fascination with nocturnal settings and the allure of distant, exotic locations such as Venice.
