A stark, expressionistic ink drawing by José Gutiérrez Solana depicting the figure of Uncle Miseries flanked by skeletal personifications of death.
José Gutiérrez Solana was a Spanish painter and writer known for his preoccupation with the darker aspects of Spanish life. His work often explores themes of death, poverty, and the grotesque, reflecting a grim reality through a stark, expressionistic lens. In this piece, the central figure of Uncle Miseries is depicted in a tense interaction with two skeletal personifications of death. The composition is direct, placing the human subject between these spectral entities, one of whom carries a scythe. The visual language relies on heavy, deliberate ink lines that define the forms of the skeletons and the heavy cloak of the man. The background is a flat, warm tone that contrasts with the dark, ink-heavy foreground figures. Solana’s approach avoids romanticism, choosing instead to present a blunt, unflinching view of mortality. His style is characterised by a lack of soft edges, favouring a harshness that aligns with his literary descriptions of the Spanish provinces. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical distortion, which serves to heighten the sense of unease. This work is representative of his broader output, which frequently drew upon the traditions of Spanish black painting, yet updated them with a modern, unsettling sensibility. The use of ink and wash allows for a high degree of contrast, ensuring the figures remain the primary focus against the simplified ground. Solana’s work remains a singular example of early twentieth-century Spanish art, capturing a specific cultural anxiety through a highly individualised aesthetic.
