Description

A detailed etching by Félix Hilaire Buhot featuring a central owl and book surrounded by atmospheric marginal illustrations.

Félix Hilaire Buhot was a master of the etching medium, known for his technical experimentation and atmospheric compositions. This work, titled 'Uil bij een opengeslagen boek, omringd door illustraties in de marge', demonstrates his characteristic approach to the print surface. The central focus is a stoic owl perched beside an open book, bearing the Latin inscription 'Pauca Paucis', which translates to 'few things for the few'. This central image is contained within a frame, yet the surrounding margins are filled with a dreamlike array of secondary sketches and vignettes.

Buhot often utilised these marginalia to expand the narrative scope of his prints. In this instance, the periphery includes ghostly figures, urban silhouettes, and maritime elements, all rendered with a delicate, painterly touch. The use of aquatint creates soft, tonal transitions that contrast with the sharper, etched lines of the central subject. This layering of imagery creates a sense of depth and complexity, inviting the viewer to examine the print closely to uncover the various motifs scattered across the plate.

As a practitioner of the etching revival in late 19th-century France, Buhot rejected the rigid, commercial reproduction techniques of his time. Instead, he embraced the expressive potential of the copper plate, often leaving plate tone to create moody, evocative effects. His work frequently bridges the gap between the literal and the allegorical, as seen here in the juxtaposition of the scholarly owl and the chaotic, shadowy world that surrounds it. This print is an example of his ability to balance technical precision with a highly personal, imaginative vision, resulting in a composition that feels both structured and fluid.
