A woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro, this artwork captures a private moment between two women after bathing, rendered in delicate lines and subtle tones, characteristic of the Ukiyo-e style.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) depicts two women in a private moment after bathing. Utamaro was a leading artist of the Ukiyo-e style, which flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries. Ukiyo-e, meaning 'pictures of the floating world', often portrayed scenes of everyday life, courtesans, actors, and famous places. Utamaro is particularly known for his bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. In this print, the women are shown in a relaxed pose, one standing and drying the other's neck with a patterned cloth. The composition is simple, with delicate lines and subtle gradations of tone. The figures are rendered with a sense of grace and intimacy, characteristic of Utamaro's style. The print is part of a series titled 'Elegant Pines of Fivefold Needles', suggesting a connection to nature and the changing seasons, themes common in Japanese art.
