A woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro depicting two itinerant female musicians from the Eta class, offering a glimpse into a marginalised community in Edo-period Japan.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) depicts two tori-oi, itinerant female musicians belonging to the Eta class in Edo-period Japan. The Eta were a discriminated-against social group, and depictions of them in art offer a glimpse into the lives of those often excluded from mainstream society. Utamaro was a master of Ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. He is particularly known for his bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. The print shows two women in full-length robes, one playing a stringed instrument. They are accompanied by two small dogs. Behind them, a framed print depicts two other women before a view of Mount Fuji. The composition is carefully arranged, with attention paid to the patterns and folds of the women's garments. The subdued colour palette and delicate lines are characteristic of Utamaro's style. The print provides insight into the social hierarchy and cultural practices of Edo-period Japan, while also demonstrating Utamaro's skill as a printmaker and his interest in representing diverse subjects.
