A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting two stage scenes, one with samurai and another with figures at a table, rendered in the Ukiyo-e style with precise linework and minimal shading.
This print by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) presents two distinct stage scenes, rendered in the Ukiyo-e style. Hokusai, a Japanese artist, is best known for his woodblock print series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji'. His work influenced Western art during the Japonism craze of the late 19th century. The upper scene depicts two samurai figures in dynamic poses, possibly engaged in combat or a dramatic performance. The lower scene shows two figures seated at a table, their gestures suggesting a narrative interaction. The composition is characterised by its use of line, typical of Japanese woodblock prints, with minimal shading to define form and space. The figures are outlined with precision, capturing their movements and expressions. The print's monochrome palette further emphasises the linear quality of the work, creating a stark contrast between the figures and the background.
