A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Lorenzo Lolli, capturing two putti in a dynamic, playful struggle through precise line work and classical form.
This etching by Lorenzo Lolli depicts two putti engaged in a playful, yet spirited, physical struggle. Lolli, a student of Guido Reni, adopted the Bolognese tradition of clear, rhythmic line work. The composition focuses on the interaction between the two figures, whose forms are defined by precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques typical of seventeenth-century Italian printmaking.
The putti are rendered with soft, rounded anatomy, characteristic of the period's fascination with classical motifs. One figure is positioned on a small, rocky outcrop, while the other leans in, creating a dynamic diagonal tension across the frame. Their wings are sketched with light, rapid strokes, providing a sense of movement that contrasts with the more grounded, solid depiction of their bodies. The background remains minimal, suggesting an open, airy space that keeps the viewer's attention fixed on the central action.
Lolli's approach to the medium demonstrates a high degree of control. The varying density of the lines creates depth and volume, particularly in the shadows cast by the figures' limbs and the folds of the drapery. This work reflects the broader Baroque interest in capturing fleeting moments of human emotion and physical energy. As a fine art print, this piece offers a clear view into the technical skill of the Bolognese school, where the clarity of the drawing was held in high regard. The print is presented on high-quality archival paper, ensuring the fine details of the original etching plate are preserved for contemporary display.
