A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, featuring two figures under a parasol, rendered with delicate lines and subtle hand-applied colour.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts two figures, likely a woman and a child, sheltered beneath a large parasol. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of Ukiyo-e, known for his innovations in print design and his role as both an artist and a publisher in Edo. His work often focused on the depiction of urban life, fashion, and the theatre.
The composition is characteristic of the mid-Edo period, utilising clean, fluid lines to define the forms of the figures and their elaborate garments. The use of hand-applied colour, known as benizuri-e or similar early colouring techniques, provides a subtle palette that complements the linear quality of the woodblock. The figures are arranged with a sense of balance, their postures suggesting a quiet, domestic interaction. The parasol creates a frame for the subjects, drawing the eye to their expressions and the objects they hold.
Masanobu was instrumental in the evolution of the Ukiyo-e genre, experimenting with perspective and composition to create more dynamic images. His influence extended to many later artists who refined the techniques of multi-colour printing. This print captures the aesthetic sensibilities of the time, where the focus remained on the elegance of the subjects and the decorative qualities of their attire. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece, revealing the texture and quality of the original materials used in the eighteenth century. This print offers a glimpse into the artistic practices of the period, demonstrating the technical skill involved in producing such works for a growing audience of art enthusiasts in Japan.
