A figurative work by Neil Welliver, depicting two figures in a stream through the artist's signature gestural, painterly style.
Neil Welliver is recognised for his approach to painting, which often involved working directly from nature in the woods of Maine. While he is most associated with large-scale depictions of the wilderness, his figurative works, such as Twice, demonstrate his interest in the interaction between the human form and the natural environment. In this composition, two figures are positioned within a wooded stream, their pale skin contrasting against the deep greens and earthy tones of the surrounding foliage.
Welliver employed a distinct method of paint application, using broad, gestural brushstrokes that maintain a sense of immediacy. The figures are rendered with a cool, almost ethereal quality, suggesting a detachment from the dense, tactile reality of the forest floor. The water, depicted with fluid, horizontal strokes, acts as a reflective surface that anchors the figures within the space. Unlike traditional academic figure painting, Welliver avoids smooth blending, preferring to allow the structure of the paint to remain visible upon the surface of the canvas. This technique creates a tension between the representational subject matter and the physical reality of the medium itself.
The composition is balanced by the placement of the two figures, who occupy different planes within the shallow depth of the stream. The interplay of light and shadow, filtered through the canopy above, creates a sense of atmosphere that is characteristic of Welliver's work from this period. By placing the human form within the untamed environment, the artist explores the relationship between the observer and the observed. The work avoids narrative artifice, focusing instead on the visual experience of light, colour, and form in the outdoors. This print captures the specific texture and tonal range of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of the artist's process and his approach to the figure in nature.
