A moody, atmospheric etching by Mary Nimmo Moran depicting a rural scene at twilight, rendered with expressive line work and deep tonal contrasts.
Mary Nimmo Moran was a central figure in the American Etching Revival of the late nineteenth century. This work, dated 1883, demonstrates her technical command of the etching needle and her ability to capture atmospheric conditions through varied line work and tonal depth. The title, derived from a Scottish phrase, refers to the transitional period between twilight and darkness when cattle return home.
The composition features a rustic wooden fence bordering a body of water, leading the eye toward a distant horizon marked by a windmill and low-lying structures. Moran employs a monochromatic palette, using the ink to create a sense of heavy, impending nightfall. The sky is rendered with dense, cross-hatched lines that convey the weight of storm clouds, while the water reflects the muted light of the fading day.
Moran often worked in the field, sketching directly onto copper plates. This approach allowed her to maintain a sense of immediacy in her depictions of rural life. Her work is characterised by a rejection of the highly polished, commercial engraving styles popular at the time, favouring instead the expressive potential of the etched line. By focusing on the textures of weathered wood, marshy ground, and the shifting quality of light, she creates a scene that feels both observed and felt. The print reflects the broader interest in rural subjects and the revival of traditional printmaking techniques that defined the period. Her contribution to the medium remains significant, as she was one of the few women of her era to achieve professional recognition as a master etcher, frequently exhibiting alongside her husband, Thomas Moran.
