A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Albert Flamen, capturing two plaice on a beach with a coastal scene in the background.
This etching by Albert Flamen depicts two plaice resting upon a sandy shore. Flamen, a Flemish artist active in Paris during the seventeenth century, specialised in the depiction of fish and aquatic life. His work often appeared in series, such as the 'Icones Piscium', which documented various species with scientific precision alongside artistic flair.
The composition places the two fish in the immediate foreground, their bodies rendered with fine, hatched lines that capture the texture of their scales and the mottled patterns of their skin. The artist employs a delicate cross-hatching technique to suggest the dampness of the sand and the subtle play of light across the surface. In the background, a calm sea stretches toward the horizon, featuring small sailing vessels and figures in a boat, which provide a sense of scale and context to the coastal setting.
Flamen's approach combines the observational rigour of natural history with the aesthetic conventions of the period. The inclusion of shells in the foreground adds a tactile quality to the scene, grounding the fish within their natural environment. The Latin and French inscription, 'Quadratulus. Le Quarlet', identifies the species, reflecting the era's interest in taxonomy and the classification of the natural world. This print demonstrates the technical skill required for etching, where the artist must rely on line weight and density to convey form and atmosphere without the use of colour. The work remains a fine example of seventeenth-century printmaking, offering a glimpse into the intersection of marine biology and artistic practice during the Dutch and Flemish Golden Age.
