A striking lithograph by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, featuring two roses set against a dark, textured background that emphasises the contrast between organic form and graphic pattern.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist known for his technical precision and his ability to balance naturalistic observation with decorative abstraction. In this lithograph, titled Twee rozen, the artist presents two rose blossoms against a dark, textured background. The contrast between the soft, light-filled petals and the dense, almost geometric pattern of the surrounding space creates a tension typical of his graphic work.
De Mesquita often employed a stark monochromatic palette to explore the interplay of light and shadow. The background is not merely a void but a constructed surface, featuring repetitive, rhythmic marks that suggest a woven or carved texture. This approach pushes the subject matter away from simple botanical representation and towards a more formal, graphic investigation of form. The roses themselves are rendered with delicate shading, allowing their organic curves to emerge from the darkness of the print.
His work frequently demonstrates an interest in the graphic potential of the printing process, particularly in lithography and woodcut. By isolating the floral subjects, he forces the viewer to focus on the structural qualities of the petals and leaves. The composition is balanced, with the two roses occupying the upper portion of the frame, while the lower area is filled with the serrated edges of the foliage. This print reflects the artist's broader interest in the decorative arts and his ability to synthesise observation with a highly individualised graphic language. The signature in the lower right corner confirms the work as an authentic example of his printmaking practice, which remained consistent in its focus on clarity, line, and tonal depth throughout his career.
