Johannes Josephus Aarts, a Dutch artist active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, produced this woodcut featuring two gaunt, nude male figures. The composition employs a stark, high-contrast aesthetic typical of the woodcut medium, where the artist relies on the interplay between black ink and the negative space of the paper to define form. The figures appear emaciated, their musculature rendered through aggressive, rhythmic gouges that suggest a sense of physical decay or asceticism.
One figure holds a bell and a candle snuffer, while the other reaches out, creating a narrative that feels allegorical or ritualistic. The heavy, angular lines used to delineate the anatomy and the surrounding shadows evoke a sombre atmosphere. Aarts was known for his technical proficiency in graphic arts, often exploring themes related to human suffering, labour, and mortality. This work reflects his interest in the expressive potential of the woodblock, where the physical act of carving dictates the final visual outcome.
