This small-scale etching by the Flemish artist Antoon Overlaet captures a quiet, observational moment between two figures. Overlaet, active during the eighteenth century, often produced works that focused on the characterisation of everyday people. The composition presents two men in profile and three-quarter view, their heads inclined as if engaged in a private conversation or shared task.
The figure on the left wears a distinctive, tall, cross-hatched hat, while the figure on the right is adorned with a soft cap featuring a small feather. Overlaet employs a delicate, economical line to define the facial features and the textures of the clothing. The cross-hatching technique is used sparingly to suggest shadow and volume, allowing the white of the paper to provide the primary illumination for the scene.
