A detailed etching by Dutch maritime artist Reinier Nooms, depicting the maintenance process of keeling sailing ships in a seventeenth-century harbour.
Reinier Nooms, often known by his nickname Zeeman (Seaman), produced this etching during the height of the Dutch Golden Age. His work reflects a deep technical understanding of naval architecture, a knowledge gained through his own experiences as a sailor. This print depicts the process of keeling, a maintenance technique where a vessel is tilted to one side to allow for the cleaning or repair of the hull below the waterline.
The composition focuses on the structural reality of the ships. Nooms employs a precise, thin line quality to delineate the complex rigging, masts, and hull construction. The etching captures the quiet industry of the harbour, with a small rowing boat carrying figures towards the shore, providing a sense of scale against the larger vessels. The background remains sparse, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the mechanics of the ships and the water surface, which is rendered with subtle, horizontal hatching.
Nooms was highly regarded for his accuracy, and his prints were frequently used as reference material by other artists and shipbuilders of the period. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on dramatic naval battles or stormy seas, Nooms preferred the observational study of everyday maritime activity. His ability to render the specific details of seventeenth-century Dutch shipping makes this work a valuable record of the era's nautical practices. The print demonstrates his mastery of the etching needle, using varying densities of line to suggest shadow and form without relying on heavy tonal washes. This piece is an example of the technical rigour that defined his career, offering a clear view into the functional life of a Dutch port.
