A detailed study of two pigeons by Dutch artist Rochus van Veen, rendered in ink and watercolour with a focus on anatomical precision.
Rochus van Veen, a Dutch artist active during the seventeenth century, specialised in the depiction of birds and small animals. This study, titled Twee dode duiven, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The composition presents two pigeons in a state of repose, rendered with a focus on anatomical accuracy and the texture of plumage. Van Veen employs a restrained palette, utilising ink washes to define the soft contours of the birds against a neutral ground.
The work reflects the broader interest in natural history and scientific observation that permeated Dutch art of the era. Rather than an allegorical arrangement, the drawing functions as a direct observation of the subject. The artist uses fine, calligraphic lines to delineate the feathers, while subtle shading provides a sense of volume and weight. The pigeons are positioned with a slight overlap, creating a sense of spatial depth despite the simplicity of the background.
This piece is representative of the studies produced by artists who documented the natural world with clinical detachment. The paper shows signs of age, which complements the muted tones of the ink and watercolour. By focusing on the physical reality of the birds, Van Veen captures a moment of stillness. The work remains a clear example of the observational rigour applied to animal studies in the Dutch Golden Age, where the artist acted as both draughtsman and naturalist. The lack of decorative elements ensures the viewer's attention remains fixed on the form and texture of the subjects themselves.
